52 Hike Challenge

Today I started the 52 Hike Challenge. I am super excited to do this. If you have been following me for a while you know a little bit about my weight loss journey. The journey to better health is long and hard. It’s been full of highs and lows. Literally it seems like the scale keeps going up and down. It even feels like I don’t have much control over it. But that’s something I know not to be true. I have control and I need to be self-disciplined enough to push myself to reach this goal.


It’s weird how other goals I work toward and I feel like I accomplish, but this goal. The goal to lose weight and not be fat seems so out of reach. It’s something I have been trying to do since the 3rd grade. Yes, you heard me. The 3rd grade. That’s also when I became painfully aware that I am fat and fat does not equal good. In fact, I’ve been wrestling battling the lesson I was taught that fat meant ugly. I mean it’s something I have been struggling with for years. It’s taken years to truly love myself physically. I’ll do a blog post about that one day.


So this year I decided I needed to have a goal to work toward. I noticed people who were working toward running marathons always ended up losing more weight. So I decided that’s what I needed to do. I also have decided to focus more on being health rather than just weight loss. The next process was just deciding the goal. One thing I knew for certain was that running was not going to be the goal I worked toward. I don’t like running and I knew it had to be something I would be interested in. So I would keep with it.


I spent a few days contemplating what my personal would goal would be. As you know I have a travel blog (www.wanderlustingandcarpediem.wordpress.com) so I’m constantly looking at various travel destinations. So naturally I started thinking about hiking. Then a few days later a travel blogger I follow on Instagram (@gabbysales) posted about her completing the 52 Hike Challenge. She posted about how she proud of herself she was and how she grew from the experience. We talked a little and then I thought more about it and about my goals for the year. And this morning I went ahead and did my first hike!


It wasn’t this long hike where I need a backpack or fancy shoes. I found a simple trail and did my best for right now. I created a goal for my 52 weeks and made a plan. So every week expect this girl to be hiking and if life gets busy I’ll just do two hikes in one week. I’m really excited about doing this and seeing how I’ve improved over the next few weeks.
